A Basic Dutch Car Insurance in the Netherlands is mandatory. When in the Netherlands, you are obliged to take out car insurance as a car owner. Unfortunately, as a foreign driver it is often difficult to take out car insurance at an affordable price. It completely depends on the insurance company if they would take your ‘international’ driving experience, or only your driving experience in the Netherlands which will probably be limited to none. For more information, also read the Dutch Government website.

Influencing the cost of your Car Insurance in the Netherlands:
Age
Your age is very important in determining the cost of your car insurance. If you are still young and a starting car driver, the insurer sees this as a greater chance of damage and the premium of your car insurance is higher. Your age does not immediately mean that you cannot take out your car insurance cheaply, there are even more factors involved in determining your car insurance premium.
Residence
If you live in a big city, there is a lot more traffic than in small villages. This increases your risk of a traffic accident. That’s why car insurers charge higher costs for your car insurance premium if you live in a large city.
The Car you drive
The Dutch Car insurance companies also look at what type of car you drive when you want to take out car insurance. They need the following information for this: power, current or new value, weight, theft sensitivity. You can expect that value is the most determining factor. For all these data, the higher they are, the more risk the insurer has. So if you have purchased a car with a high power and weight, the premium for your car insurance is higher.
Amount of claim-free years
If you have driven a number of claim-free years, the costs for your car insurance will be lower. However, if you take out your first car insurance policy in the Netherlands, you can be considered as a young driver and you have not yet built up claim-free years.
Therefore, try not to drive damage and build up as many damage-free years as possible over the years. This way your car insurance premium decreases a little bit.
What is the cheapest car insurance in the Netherlands?
What exactly is the cheapest car insurance in the Netherlands is unknown because it depends on too many factors. In any case, it is clear that this is insurance with third-party liability coverage (WA-Verzekering), the minimum coverage that is mandatory in the Netherlands.
This insurance provides cover for damage that you cause to others with your car. Because this cheapest cover is mandatory, all road users in the Netherlands are protected against damage after a collision.
The lowest premium will probably be paid by a driver in the north of the Netherlands, because the premiums are the cheapest there on average. This driver will not drive much, own an older car, have 20+ claim-free years and third-party liability coverage.
The three (main) different car insurances in the Netherlands:
Liability Coverage
Limited hull coverage
Full hull coverage.
If desired, this cover can be expanded with additional insurance, such as passenger or legal assistance cover.
Liability Coverage (also known as WA-dekking)
Liability coverage is legally required by the WAM (Dutch Government organization). The WAM does not only require liability coverage, but also determines which minimum requirements the insurance must meet.
The WAM sets minimum requirements that a car insurance policy must meet. The main requirements are:
Insured amount: at least €907,560. If the car is located in a country with a higher minimum, the insurance must offer cover for that amount. This minimum insured amount has been increased to 1 million euros per victim, but a maximum of 5 million euros per event and a minimum of 1 million euros for material damage. The insured sum in the event of personal injury at least 1 million euros per victim or 5 million per event. It also covers Injury and Property Damage within Europe.
The insurance does not have to provide cover for:
Damage caused with a stolen car;
Joyriding;
Damage to transported goods,
Damage to the driver;
Limited hull coverage (also known as beperkt cascodekking)
Damage caused by a storm is covered on the limited hull cover. The limited hull cover can be taken out in addition to the third-party liability cover. Roughly speaking, it can be stated that the limited hull cover compensates damage to your own car insofar as this was not caused by a collision, collision, getting off the road, etc.
Full hull coverage (also known as volledige dekking)
This package often is the most expensive and covers most all damages that are made on your car and covers the same things as mentioned above. You can also be covered when you’re causing a collision or have one-sided damage to your own car (hitting a tree for example).
