Understanding Dutch Financials

Congratulations, you made the brave choice to move to the Netherlands for love, family or work. We promise you the Netherlands will not disappoint you. You will survive the weather, visit Amsterdam and have a great time below sea level. To make sure you also land financially, you have to apply to certain rules and also know how we do things in the Netherlands. We got you covered with our Financial step-by-step Guide.

A Dutch Bank Account

It’s essential that you open a Dutch Bank Account to receive your salary, pay health insurance and make transactions. A European Bank account will not help you, so please make sure to open a Dutch Bank Account. In the Netherlands, you can pay with Mastercard and Visa, but some supermarkets don’t accept them (yet). Don’t look up strange when non-Dutch won’t work. You need a Maestro and V-pay card that you will  get when you open a Dutch Bank Account. More information on this page

A Dutch Credit Card

In day-to-day usage, it’s probably not your go-to card, but it’s essential for your more expensive transactions. In the Netherlands we don’t pay much with Credit Cards, but your Credit Card must be registered in the Netherlands to make use of the insurances coming with the Credit Card. AmEx can be used in the Netherlands, but quite often retailers or restaurants don’t accept American Express. Only when you live in Amsterdam can it be a useful card for you. If you want to know more about Credit Cards, please read more here.

A Dutch Health Insurance

If you got your Bank Account or Credit Card set up, make sure you apply for Health Insurance as soon as possible. This is mandatory and if you don’t apply fines go up to €600,-. Also, make sure if you are shorter than a year in the Netherlands (as International Student for example) you don’t take a Yearly Health Insurance. If you come here to work, your employer is not allowed to cover your health insurance – make sure you apply for it yourself. We have our recommendation on this page.
